Introduction

This project focuses on energy monitoring and savings through an Energy Dashboard to enhance efficiency and sustainability.

Project Overview

The initiative involves designing and building a real-time energy monitoring tool that allows tracking energy usage across the UAEU campus. The goal is to optimize energy consumption and reduce emissions through strategic energy-saving measures.

Method

In-house design and build of a user-friendly energy monitoring tool allowing access to real-time, campus-wide energy usage and enabling tracking against energy targets. The objective is to maintain maximum energy consumption efficiency and apply potential energy reductions across the campus, aided by initiatives implemented by Khadamat Facility Management and UAEU Facility Management Department.
The Smart Energy Management System combines information from the Building Management System (BMS) with data from various campus departments providing real-time knowledge of energy usage.
Visualising energy data makes it easier to identify corrective action and potential energy reduction irregularities.
Trending and normalising energy usage against weather data, university occupancy, and various energy rates provide the detail needed to make informed energy-saving decisions and to perform ongoing measurement and verification.
Energy meters are connected via BMS communication protocol, and data is posted to a secured dashboard.
The Energy Dashboard was completed by Khadamat in-house team utilising basic features from the Building Management System. The dashboard monitor was produced as part of an up-cycling initiative by rectifying technical issues and replacing parts of a defective 23 LCD TV screen obtained from the security control room.
The Energy Dashboard gathers information from each building so energy consumption can be tracked against dynamic energy targets. Specific goals are set for improving energy use and reaching emission reduction objectives.

Key Outcomes and Learnings

Recorded energy savings of 28,237 MWh (2014-2019), enough to power the UAEU campus for 178 days.this resulted in the  Improvement of real-time energy tracking led to optimized energy use and cost reduction and  enhanced environmental responsibility through efficient energy management.
