Introduction

The project aimed to incentivize recycling among students while improving environmental awareness through a smart system that rewards recycling actions.

Project Overview

The ISRB was designed to reward students for recycling by using a smart bin that tracks and awards points for recycling activity, with rewards linked to retail and restaurant coupons.

Method

A prototype of the ISRB was created, consisting of two bins, four motion sensors, and an LCD screen.
- An application was developed using the Python library Kivy, connected to a Raspberry Pi 3 computer.
- When an object is thrown into the bin, the sensor is activated, generating a unique QR code on the LCD screen.
- Users log in through the app, scan the QR code, and earn points, which are tracked in a backend database.
- Points can be redeemed for coupons at partner outlets.

Key Outcomes and Learnings

The project is still in progress, with sponsors and retail partners being sought for collaboration. The team faced challenges in learning and applying new technologies but gained significant technical, collaborative, and environmental awareness skills. These technologies will be valuable in future projects.
